Las Coloradas and Rio Lagartos
Las Coloradas is a set of pools that belong to one of the most important salt processing plants in Mexico, the Sal Sol. The pools are several kilometers long and they're are generally shallow. The pink color is given by the combination of several factors: the high concentration of salt in the water, the proliferation of microorganisms called halobacteria, which produce a large amount of reddish pigments, and the sunlight, which makes the water evaporate thus allowing salt to solidify and reflect colors more intensely. The tone can vary from soft pink to intense, almost reddish.
